The producers and director should apologize to all of the surviving members of the space program that worked countless hours to send that flag to the moon and have it ignored on film because assholes don't want to see it.

Since neither of us had any idea, I did some research.  Turns out the reason for eliminating the scene of planting the American flag was a political statement.
