Blacks were getting lynched regularly in the 20th century. But you think that there was some sort of morality wave in the 1800's in the South that was going to eradicate slavery? That is the most asinine thing I've ever read on this board. And I read a lot of stuff from Lifetime.

also, after the war the south passed what were called black codes that restricted many things from blacks and made them slaves again in everything but name. they had to pass more laws to eliminate these on the federal level.

the south also favored segregation very heavily (separate facilities for whites and blacks), poll taxes, etc. That lasted well into the 20th century.

one of the little discussed things was that while northern abolitionists worked hard to end slavery, when freed blacks started moving north, the abolitionists didn't want them moving into their neighborhoods. "We're glad you're free, but you can't live here" became a common obstacle for the newly freed former slaves.
