Doesn't mean you locked up your gun.

ok...

The prosecutor has the burden of proof to prove that the gun was not locked up in a safe, not the other way around.  No different than every other criminal case in existence.

Then they are not taking their responsibility as a gun owner serious and if their gun is taken and used in a murder they should be charged with murder too.

What if someone tries to murder you with one of your own knives?  Should you both be charged with attempted murder?

Right... it is too hard.  If we were really the greatest country in the world we would be doing more instead of saying it is too hard.

Okay, how do you propose to obtain the 300 million plus existing firearms in this country and prevent the import of them when we can't keep out drugs, people, or tentacle porn? The answer cannot include or paraphrase the concept of trying really really hard.

And by the way, New Mexico might be a desert, but it is our country, there are plenty of people that know it like the back of their hands, it isn't a remote foreign country.

Because the problem in the satellite era is that there just isn't a Rand-McNally atlas for the region. And how exactly remote is a region when you have multiple bases in country?

Because no matter how many satellite images you have you still have to investigate all of those regions as a foreign force.  We have a police force and national guard that we could mobilize and search with experts on the region in no time.

To your first question it is simple,  you just buy them back.  It will take decades but it isn't impossible.  People will always be able to smuggle bad things in, but again I ask you, if it is so simple, why aren't there more bombings?  RPG attacks?  etc

Are you implying there aren't experts in Afghani geography, culture, political groups etc. The burden of proof is on you to prove how it is different. Are you suggesting that either the military or local law enforcement would disregard any semblance of due process and kill or jail anyone the modestly suspect of disloyalty? How exactly would the political power stay in power for long in such a police state?

So even in your best case scenario you concede that it's very unlikely that the "bad guys" would ever not be armed? That by definition the only guns that would be removed from circulation would be those willing and law abiding enough to turn them in?

Are you supposing that it would be harder to create homemade bombs and explosive devices in this country than in Europe or Israel?

Yes but the FBI isn't tracking the materials to make meth or drugs like they are bomb making materials.

You're kidding, right?  You've ever bought the behind the counter cold medicine at Walmart? You've ever bought animal feed store amounts of iodine?   Yeah, they are paying fucking attention. It's almost like there is a war on drugs.

Just like all of those materials it takes to make C4 at Walmart too, right?

Databases make the world go round.  But yeah with just a little more effort than what you're putting into this argument, as in not much, it isn't that hard. Have they started tracking purchases of pressure cookers?
