Angelsjunky's Quick Takes on the Republican Candidates

Recommended Posts

Our options absolutely suck this election. I like Jeb a lot, but don't think he has any chance.

I don't despise Hilary, though don't think she is genuine and I worry about her age. But she is highly competent and experienced.

Bernie terrifies me. I am worried he will take all my money and redistribute it to the lazy bums who elect him. I hate socialism.

phil, Bill has worried about her age since the 80's.  Remember he doesn't want to tap that. That would be my dirty campaign add.  "If your husband won't hit it 30 years ago, how can you run the country?"

Well let's start with a question for libs - if you had to pick a Republican candidate for president, who would it be?

I could live with Rand Paul or that John Kasich guy. I can't quite figure out Rand - in the debates he seems there to simply debate points rather than actually run for president. But he's generally pretty moderate and steady in his thinking and I like his libertarian approach to foreign policy even if, like all libertarians, he's half right and half hopelessly naive and/or lacking in anything resembling compassion. Kasich is simply the least offensive of the normal Republicans - he is like an old school 80s Republican, not one of these scary Rovean neocons. Remember Bob Dole? He seems so cute and harmless now.

Everyone else terrifies me to varying degrees and in different ways. I thought Chris Christie was third on my "if I had to" list, but his silly machismo about the no fly zone really scares me. I hate the thought of Christie going up against Putin ("Putin vs. Pudding?") - he'd be  steamrolled. Marco Rubio is hard to gauge - he seems like a young punk with a perpetual tiny dick hard-on who is trying to make a political name for himself, like a weaker and more weasely version of John Cusack's character in True Colors. Ted Cruz is all kinds of weird - he looks like he's an alien wearing a human rubber mask that doesn't fit his gruesome alien features very well. He scares me in an almost diabolical way, but at least he seems (devilishly) competent; if you're a Republican who wants to see a regime change, you've got to be hoping he gets the nomination as I think he could challenge Hilary. Jeb Bush seems like he's doing an amateur impersonation of Will Ferrell pretending to be Dubya - the guy is humorless and lacking even an ounce of charisma or distinction, sort of like the bizarro Trump. I guess it could be worse, though. Speaking of The Trump...what to say. I almost like about a third of what he says and mildly enjoy his humor and honesty if only for entertainment value, but he's a raging racist, misogynist and megalomaniac and the thought of him having the nuclear codes is an absurdity. Its like Arte Moreno making baseball decisions.

Ben Carson reminds me of that mild-mannered guy who has a tied up child in his basement...there's some scary shit underneath that calm demeanor. Or maybe not, which just makes him the black version of Leave it to Beaver, as if black America is saying, "but we didn't get our 1950s!" Carly Fiorino is the Wicked Witch of the West and seems like she's only in it to have a cat fight with Hilary - she almost hisses when she mentions her. But she probably doesn't scare me as much as most of these dudes. If George Pataki was actually trying I'd group him in with Kasich - I'm honestly not sure what he's doing up there, though. Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, I mean Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee, are like southern preachers with delusions of grandeur. I'll say no to their 1950s theocratic vision of America. I'd love to see an SNL spoof where they're all proud about having a black friend, namely Ben Carson. Finally, the cream of the crop: Lindsey Graham...my god, this guy is a nut-job. "If you don't like war, don't vote for me." I'll never get over that. Maybe its a matter of over-compensation and he's less of a hawk and more of a chicken hawk.

OK, I'm done. I hope that helps everyone clarify their choices.

Was this meant to be a satirical rant on the political party you are not aligned with? Or, are you sincerely curious about whom one might choose as their candidate for the presidency?

That's a reductionism, in my opinion. It is a partial truth, but one that is woefully limited and, well, overly simplistic.

Also, not everyone is driven by competition and success. That is part of it, but there are other driving factors, other needs (see, for instance, Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs).

Once again, you look for some intellectual convoluted explanation.  See the quotes I posted.

I have learned in business that there is no such thing as overly simplistic.  When you complicate things you reduce the chance of success.

Both?

We're going to have to disagree here. Simplicity has its place, but the world is a diverse, complex place. People have different needs and motivations - it isn't all about the drive for success and competition, as you say it is. This view you espouse--which is essentially Social Darwinism--isn't an objective fact, but a worldview that was dreamed up in the latter half of the 19th century to explain things, partially as a reaction to theology.

Lmao. This was an actual rebuttal to why socialism, a system that robs people of hard-earned money and allows the government to muck around in society, will never work in an economy as big as the United States.

You know, for as much as you criticize "laissez-faire" economics, the United States happens to have the best economy in the entire world. Somehow, someway, we do just fine without the government giving money to lazy pieces of shit for no apparent reason(for the most part - it could still be better with a more fiscally conservative president).

You want poor people to have all those benefits you have? It's coming out of your pocket and quality of life in order to happen. I don't see how that could possibly be a good thing for this country

You make being poor sound so ****ing awesome. You should try it sometime.

as long as we have a do-it-yourself system, people will always be in a variety of classes. there are a multitude of reasons for why people end up where they do. it's up to individuals to make the most of the opportunities that are out there in our system. that involves taking advantage of education and pursuing things that interest you for a career. paying people $15 for flipping burgers as a career move is not going to move people from a lower class to a higher one, nor is increasing my taxes to help little lamar get more food stamps. it's not the job of gov't to create those opportunities and that's why socialism needs to take a hike. i worked hard to get where i am. there's no reason the next guy shouldn't do the same.

It points to one of the problems of internet communication: you and I aren't real people to each other, we just see an avatar and have a gist of the other, but it is really rather narrow.

Maybe I should get myself to Fanfest one of these days, and then you can tell me what you really think about me, face to face.

Too late, Fanfest was cancelled because we figured you'd never show up. All those years the invite was there and you snubbed the hosts.
