Angels out on big LF FA

“We’re doing the best we can,” said Moreno, who spoke before serving as Grand Marshall of the Newport Beach Christmas boat parade.

Moreno said the Angels are currently about $4 million under the $189 million threshold for paying the luxury tax. It’s a line he’s been reluctant to cross.

Ok so $4 million left to spend to fix the bullpen, LF, and 2B. I like their chances

It's about economics? Tell us again about the TV deal you signed, Arte. Brag about your lack of debt. Tell us about those plans you have for the stadium and the parking lot Anaheim will let you do what you please with

Actually, shut up, Arte.

The Angels literally would've been better off not making ANY moves, than making the moves Eppler made.  He could've done NOTHING and we'd still have bee an 80-85 win team.  Instead, Eppler traded away our only freakin' prospect and a franchise player in Erick Aybar, and the end results is an 80-85 win team.

We lost our top prospect, for nothing.

Then I'll do the best I can to attend some games this year but don't get your hopes up.

BTW, if someone is looking for some spin, I would like to point this out:

Why would Arte come out and say this right now?  Why not just let everything play out and tell the fans that they tried, but it just didn't work out?

My guess is that the asking prices are insane and that if it comes back to an appropriate level (for baseball anyway) that we could get back in.

His phrasing was very particular - "Right now, if I had to make a decision, we'd probably be out".    Meaning he doesn't want to pay the current asking price.

I wonder if they have done the math on who is still in the mix for these guys and realize that there aren't a lot of teams in the mix so one of these guys is going to drop through the cracks.

whatever.....I gave it a shot.

Yes the Newport Beach Boat Parade is exactly the space to start the smoke screen.

I like how he says the payroll is already the largest it's ever been. So it's either A: Have a high payroll and actually have a chance at competing or B: Have a high payroll and be lucky to win more than 85 games in each of the next two seasons.

Yes, they did have all the resources but Dipoto pissed them away by not blocking the Pujols and Hamilton deal.

Please - none of us have any idea how those deals went down and how much protesting Dipoto may have done. To concede that they were Arte's ideas and STILL find a way to blame Dipoto . .  well, that's just some real GOP shit right there. Well done.

It's embarrassing to have a generational player, yet not go all in on the next 2-3 years when you know damn well the farm system is pathetically bad and will not help us when Trout is set to be an FA in 2020.

I've never been this bummed about the future of this franchise, and it's because of that pathetic owner of ours

Also, I don't see 4 million under budget as a bad thing.  Heck, I cold fix this team and save us money right now.

1. Trade CJ and Santiago for a 2B and a RP.

2. Trade Andrelton Simmons for a LF and a couple prospects.  Play another defensive specialist at SS like Pennington.

There you go, now we have a 2B, now we have a middle reliever, now we have a LF, and now we have prospects.  Was that so freakin' hard?  I'll go into more detail later.

Yes, they did have all the resources but Dipoto pissed them away by not blocking the Pujols and Hamilton deal. Now Eppler has to pull a rabbit out of his ass on what is less than an A's budget after all of the dead contracts are added up.

Think about it, you all whine they waste money and draft picks and never used advanced metrics to build a team without hitting the salary cap like (insert team that sucked for 10 years reaping high draft picks_________) and now that they are actually using their heads you're all pissing and moaning because they are not flushing another $100, 120,150,180 million down the left field rabbit hole.

The Angels have not had a solid left fielder since Anderson left. That is over $220 million wasted on one position and now you want them to piss another $100 plus million away to solve and $10 million dollar problem. They just need less than a black hole in that role. Not a fading star like Gordon, a mixed bag in Upton or a possible bust in Cespedes.

So if Moreno said enough of this foolishness, our analytic department gave me the real world and it's pretty ugly in terms of dollars for production out of free agency, then Yay, there is hope.

Of course tomorrow Moreno could wake up and say, **** it, I want Cespedes and we go right back to wasting money and resources on a player. But you guys will be happy until April.

I'd agree with everything you said if the Angels didn't gut their farmsystem for Simmons.

No other team was willing to give up as much even though they all had far more talent. That tells me all I need to know.
