I agree, but that can also happen without Shamu jumping through a fiery hoop.  Yes, I know that Shamu is the main attraction but they can still provide the education without those shows.  Public outcry is driving this decision and time will tell how much of an effect this has on Sea World.

One could, if one were so inclined, make a horrible comparison to Planned Parenthood.  Outside of the abortions, they do a lot of good.

How much impact would the education have if there weren't live animals to view?

one of the things sea world did many years ago was to stop teaching the orcas to do show tricks. they found that when it wasn't showtime and the orcas were in the tanks, they did all kinds of things on their own. the trainers learned hand signals that they then taught to the orcas to repeat those same behaviors, and those behaviors, in effect, became "the show" that was performed.  this wasn't the case in the early days of the park, but it changed quite a bit so over the years to what their show is today.

They're forced to live their entire life in a small (for them) enclosure with extremely limited interactions with their own kind. How is that being treated well?

while their enclosure is small, the animals are well fed and receive top medical care. they are also greatly loved by their trainers and handlers, fwiw.

i don't imagine you and i will see eye to eye on this definition, and i can appreciate your POV.

i think one of the great benefits of sea world has been the chance for all of us to learn about these magnificent animals up close. our amount of information has increased tremendously over the years that sea world has been in operation, and i'm grateful for that. i'm not terribly bothered that sea world has about 20 orcas in captivity when compared to the numbers that live free, though i'm sure a compelling argument can be made against even 20 being held in parks. again, i would argue that they are not an endangered species and the benefits of what we've learned about them at the park has far outweighed the negatives.

i support giving them much, much larger tanks in which to live. that's something that's bothered me about the whole operation.

How about the ocean? That's a pretty large tank, Tank.

no argument on that fact, ray, but like i said, they're not an endangered species, so it doesn't bother me.

their estimate is that there are least 50,000 orcas in the wild. sea world owns about 20 and has done a lot of research that has been beneficial.

Why does a species have to be nedangered for their to be cause for concern? That is exactly the rationale that allows a species to become endangered in the first place. Leave wild amimals alone to live in the environment in which nature intended.

sea world is awful.

monterey bay aquarium is the sh*t though.

the drive from here to there is one of my favs as well.

I like the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla a great deal more than the one in Monterey. If you haven't been there yet, it's worth the drive.
