Grienke Officially Opts Out

He's thinking "lowest ERA in twenty years" (since Maddux in 1994-95). Greinke is an excellent pitcher, but he's not as good as that 1.66 ERA would entail. He's more of a 2.50 - 3.00 ERA pitcher, which is still "staff ace" material but he's also 32.

That said, Greinke is the type of pitcher who will remain good into his mid-30s, maybe even into his late 30s. Still, he's going to want 7ish years and $25 million per year. Not sure Arte wants to pay 7/$175M for a 32-year old pitcher.

As much as A-Rod is out of New York after he opted out.

Or CC when he opted out.

CC opted out of 4/$92.  CC then got a 5/$122.

Greinke opted out of 3/$71.  Probably looking for around a 5/$125, which would put him at 36/37 at the end of his contract.  Someone will pay the man his money.

He's got that Mike Mussina mix of stuff and guile...   Probably the best bet among pending FA pitchers.

Ok, what would you be willing to pay him to come to the Angels and what do you think he will get? I would be willing to offer him the same deal they thought he would agree to three years ago, 5 years $125 million. What do I think he will get, probably 6 years $162 million, right around $27 million a year. He will probably stay in the NL since he likes to hit and would probably have to be blown away in order to come back to the AL, that is when you see the 7th or even 8th year added to his deal.

I found it interesting to learn recently that he has a real interest in a front office position after his playing days are done and that he loves analyzing young players. This Grienke is a different guy than the one that started his career and had social anxiety issues and almost failed because of it. In a weird way I am almost "proud" (not really the right word) of his growth as a person the last several years, good for him. Not sure they are allowed to tack on a personal services type of contract on his players contract to give him a front office gig, but if you can, that might be the way to sign him and give you an edge over the competition.

Opting out isn't a polite request.

No but it was agreed upon in the contract negotiations and was a foregone conclusion he would opt out if he pitched well leading up to the opt out. The final 3 years and $71 million was basically his insurance policy in case he got hurt or became ineffective.

After Pujols did his, they made it so you can't anymore.  I believe.
