Fan Fatally Injured at Turner Field

Recommended Posts

So has any details come out about what exactly he was doing?  Was he seated and jumped up and leaned too far?  Was he running down the stairs?

From what I saw in the only article I read, it sounded like he got up, like got up from his seat, and went over.  And I'm just wondering how that is possible.  I can see him going over the rail if he was running down the stairs.  But even then, you really don't see that in the top level going down ever.  And considering the MLB mandated that the rails be raised after that one fan died, I think it might even have been at Atlanta.  A foul ball, and reaching over to grab it isn't part of the equation.

And remember, this happened in the first inning.  I guess if he was tailgating all day, he could be that drunk to fall over.

The hatred's going to flow anew now that the medical examiner has ruled the death an accident, and at least one witness says the man was intoxicated and acting belligerently.

Yeah, he screwed up and paid for it with his life. He also could have hurt other people, but he's dead and his family is grieving. There's not much more to say.

All things considered, pretty amazing these types of deaths don't happen more frequently.

Something I learned years ago is that really tall people are sometimes terrified of those railings in the upper levels.  I have a 6'9" friend, probably 300 pounds, he loves baseball but always turned down free tickets to the upper levels.  At home BBQ's, he stayed off the balcony.  We always assumed he had a fear of heights, then one day he went skydiving.

He said he was at Dodger Stadium, upper deck, front row, when somebody came through with a tray of food.  He stood up with his back to the field to let them pass.  I guess he leaned back further than he should have and started to lose his balance over the railing.  The guy seated next to him was watching all of this go down and lunged at his legs to pin them against the railing.  I think it was the guys seated behind him who also lunged for his arms to pull him back in, not sure.

Anyway, the point being is that he probably would have died much the same way had it not been for the attentive fans around him.

Let your friend know they were trying to steal his wallet.
