While it's good they caught the Golden State Killer.  Now it coming out on how they caught him.  So what's everyone's thoughts on how they caught him?  Using a DNA site like ancenstry to narrow down the suspects.  Is this good policing, or a total invasion of privacy?  Could you imagine if all the DNA evidence got tossed out due to the using this data?

"congratulations!  you are 42% croatian, 26% german,  and someone in your family is likely a serial rapist & murderer".

does everyone who paid the fee to get their genealogy test from those sights also know they consented to possibly incriminating everyone in their distant family? i'm all for modern forensics technology but this seems sketchy, especially if they just took a list of possibly family matches, staked them all out and waited until they each threw away their tray at mcdonalds.  guess it depends on the details of how the investigation went down.

and that's exactly my objection to using sites like this.

i have absolutely nothing to hide, but i have zero interest in someone else gaining access to that kind of information about me.

You consent to sharing your data publicly when you use those sites, and it also looks like there is an "aggregator" site which you can go to and then submit your dna profile from one of the other sites. Looks like that is what might have been used.

Will be interesting to get more details on how the process worked, and I'm sure the courts will be asked to rule on this...I'm guessing there are a lot of perpetrators whose assholes are clenched just a bit tighter right now.

If you get that odd call from your second cousin asking...hey...you know that Ancestry.com gift certificate I sent you...

Welcome to 23 years in prison and Me DNA kit. You don't have to take the test to be part of the aggregate. So you won't ever have a choice to keep your DNA profile secure if one blood related family member does take it. I always thought this was a sneaky way to catalogue everyone's DNA profile for government use.

I think it's GREAT policing. This is the world we live in.

Maybe they will finally track down the SOB that stole my car radio back in '78. That was a top of the line Marantz 420 CompuTuner, goddammit!

I hope so. That's a big deal.

The things that are and will be made possible by harnessing DNA are amazing. They are wonderful and very scary.

And they can find them through your DNA

That's kinda the whole deal, though. Finding people is the appeal. In my experience, a user has to consent to being linked to others. Given that, it becomes a case of whether this is tantamount to identity fraud. If they violated the terms of the service, that's just like any other identity fraud, no?
