I'd lay the blame more on Pujols' inability to hit the ball the other way anymore, though the two are somewhat related

 

He's always been a dead pull hitter.  In 2008 when he hit .357 he only had 21 opp field hits.  

 

This year he has 14 opposite field hits already and he's barely at .250...for comparisons sake in 2009 he had 14 opp field hits and hit .327.

 

I know he's gotten older, but use of the shift has been dramatically used over the last few years as opposed to back in 2008.
