I will never understand this line of thinking. People say the same thing when the pitching sucks. "Oh the offense can't be expected to score 5 runs tonight when the pitcher puts them in an early hole." The pitcher's job is to go out there and hold the other team to as few runs as possible. I'm not saying they aren't aware of pressure or anything like that, but I doubt Richards is out there rattled because he thinks he has to pitch a shutout every night in order to win. Isn't it his goal to pitch a shutout every night, regardless?

Yes but it's not realistic for him to go out and pitch a shutout every time. If he finishes tonight with 7IP and 3 runs given up I think that's pretty solid and he's given us a chance to win.

Of course it isn't realistic. He's going to have bad games, and not-so-great games, just like every other pitcher. I'm just saying that him giving up 3+ runs is not likely a cause of pressure from the poor offense. It isn't all his fault the team is losing, but it's absolutely his fault that he has allowed 3 earned runs.
