Images of the Amazon Reef taken from a submarine launched from the MY Esperanza. The Greenpeace ship is currently in the region of the Amazon river mouth, Amapá State, for the “Defend the Amazon Reef” campaign. (Greenpeace)

Scientists working in the waters off the coast of South America have released the first images of the stunning Amazon Reef.

The coral reef was discovered last year during an expedition off the coast of Brazil where the Amazon River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Scientists aboard the Greenpeace ship Esperanza were conducting an exploration using a submarine when they came across the system, located about 721 feet below the sea and 62 miles off the coast.

Some 600 miles long, the reef stretches from French Guyana to the Brazilian state of Maranhão and is part of a system of corals, sponges and rhodoliths, with an area of 3,600 square miles, according to Greenpeace. In addition, the reef's usage of light is unique, as are its water conditions, according to experts.

In a press release on the Greenpeace website, Nils Asp, a researcher at the Federal University of Pará, said the reef “has a huge potential for new species, and it is also important for the economic well-being of fishing communities along the Amazonian Coastal Zone.”

Here's a real terrible mother. Some people don't deserve to have kids.

Mugshot for Iris Hernandez-Rivas (Montgomery County Police Department)

Police said that in an interview Thursday Hernandez-Rivas admitted kicking her daughter in the abdomen after becoming angry because Nohely had not brushed her teeth, the station reported.

The woman told cops that Nohely hit her head when she fell backwards into a wall after being kicked.

Hernandez-Rivas told police the girl suffered the bruises when she hit her with a belt several days earlier.

FOX 5 DC reported that Hernandez-Rivas is currently charged with first-degree child abuse and first-degree assault. Police are waiting on a ruling by the medical examiner on the child’s official cause of death before determining if she will also face more serious charges.

Cops at scene of a road rage incident in Ocala, Fla., Wednesday. (Ocala Police Department)

Pickup crushes car in Florida road rage case

Ocala police responded to the scene Wednesday and found a Toyota Camry underneath a Ford F-150, according to reports.

Pickup driver Zach Waring, 18, told cops said the incident began when he accused the Toyota driver, Adalberto Aponte, of driving recklessly and nearly causing accidents. As he sat in his pickup at a stoplight, Aponte got out of his car, walked up to him and started pummeling him through the window.

Waring said he then backed up his vehicle when Aponte ran back to the Toyota, saying that he was getting a gun.

He told officers he was afraid Aponte was going to kill him, his girlfriend and their infant child, WTSP-TV in St. Petersburg reported Thursday.

Police charged Aponte with burglary, battery, driving with a suspended license and criminal mischief.

Waring was not charged.

WTSP reports that Aponte’s driver’s license was suspended in August for failure to pay child support.

VANISHING ACT?
BART janitor who pulled in $270G spent hrs in closet

A BART janitor in San Francisco who raked in $271,000 in a single year, based largely on overtime work, was captured on  video disappearing into a storage closet at one of the stops and—at times- spending hours a day there.

KTVU requested surveillance video to observe how Liang Zhao Zhang would spend his marathon, 17-hour work day. At one point, the channel reported that Zhang entered the closet twice in one shift, once for  54 minutes and the other for 90 minutes.

Zhang said that he takes his meal breaks during that time. A spokeswoman from BART said Zhang was paid every day in 2015 because he “signs up for every overtime slot that becomes available.

“He is likely working almost every day of the year cleaning our stations. He is signing up for the time that is also available to others – if he doesn’t take the hours, someone else will. The sign-ups are based on seniority,” she said.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that 49 other janitors made over $100,000 in 2015.

Zhang reportedly was called “superhuman” for the amount of hours he put in, at one point working 17 hours for 18 days in a row in 2015.

Buddhist monk caught hiding millions of meth pills in monastery

A massive stash of drugs turned up in a place the police may have expected the least.

A monk named Arsara was caught hiding more than four million methamphetamine pills at his monastery in Maungdaw, Burma, authorities said, after they found 400,000 pills inside his car on Sunday night.

Arsara currently is in custody, the AFP reported.

Burma is one of the world’s top narcotics-producing countries, generating huge amounts of meth, opium and cannabis each year.

hair-blowtorch-210b.jpg?tl=1&ve=1

A cut above? Barber styles hair with a blowtorch

It could be the hottest salon in town.

A man in Gaza is showing off an unusual method of styling hair: by lighting it up with a blowtorch.

"I control how long I apply fire, I keep it on and off for 10 seconds or 15 seconds. It is completely safe and I have not encountered any accident since I started it two months ago," Ramadan Odwan told Reuters in an interview published Thursday. He said he typically used the device to straighten hair.

The cost? A haircut and blowtorching would set you back only about $5.00 at the salon in the town of Rafah.

Photos showed the 37-year-old hairstylist in action. The customers seemed pretty unfazed.

Odwan said he would first apply a protective liquid coating on the hair -- without gtting into specifics -- before unleashing the flames. He pointed out that other hairstylists have used fire before, although the blowtorch may be in a class by itself.

"People have gone crazy about it, many people are curious to go through the experience and they are not afraid," he added.

Just happens to be from where I live. Great, Bullhead City makes the national news and it's about drugs.

Tourist’s shocking package

Tourist’s shocking package

Many visitors to Key West are looking to soak up the sun or go whale-watching. But one visitor from Arizona was itching to try something a little different-- the drug meth.

According to the Miami Herald, Robert Bare, a 24-year-old man from Bullhead City, Ariz., was arrested after mailing a package of crystal methamphetamine to the Inn at Key West. The would-be visitor reportedly sent the drug across state lines hoping to try the drug during his Florida vacation.

Bare sent the drugs prior to his arrival at the Inn, but neglected to address the box to himself. He did, however, list “Robert Dean Bare” as the name on the return address.

Not knowing where to deliver it, the hotel staff opened Bare’s package on Feb. 8-- a few days before Bare himself was scheduled to arrive. They discovered the drugs — which he had wrapped in “dirty socks and newspaper” — and immediately contacted the authorities.

Bare later arrived at the front desk to retrieve his mail but was greeted by an undercover detective acting as a hotel employee. The guest was apprehended in the Inn’s lobby after a brief struggle.
