Airport worker killed after being sucked into jet engine

Airport and airline authorities in India on Thursday began investigating the death of a technician who was sucked into an aircraft engine at an airport in Mumbai.

Air India chief Ashwani Lohani said the accident happened Wednesday evening when the plane was being moved from an airport gate. A pilot misinterpreted a signal and switched on the plane's engine.

Lohani said the aircraft was being pushed back from the gate when the accident happened.

The maintenance engineer was working on equipment used to push back the aircraft when he was sucked into the engine and killed instantly, Lohani said.

The plane was full of passengers for a flight from Mumbai to the southeastern city of Hyderabad.

The hunt for the killer of a 19-year-old Mississippi woman who was burned alive last year has resulted in the arrests of 17 suspected gang members, authorities said this week, though none have been directly linked to the woman's death.

FBI officials announced the arrests Tuesday of suspected members of the Black Gangster Disciples, Vice Lords, and Sipp Mob street gangs, according to The Clarion-Ledger newspaper.

Officials told the paper the investigation, dubbed "Operation Bite Back", was focused on Panola County, in the northwest of the state, and was a byproduct of the investigation into the death of Jessica Chambers.

Off-duty Baltimore cop kills robbery suspect brandishing toy gun

An off-duty Baltimore cop shot and killed an armed robbery suspect who police say tried to rob the officer with what turned out to be a toy gun.

The shooting Saturday at 1:30 a.m. on a block of homes decorated with Christmas lights in the Baltimore suburb of Linthicum Heights was being investigated by Anne Arundel County Police, Fox 45 reported. Police said, according to the the station, that the officer fired in self-defense. They identified the robbery suspect as 32-year-old Edel Moreland.

“We feel very bad for the Moreland family to deal with the loss of a son especially around the holidays,” Anne Arundel Police Lt. Ryan Frashure told the station. “I’m sorry, our condolences to the family. Our condolences to the Baltimore city officer. It’s a very unfortunate incident to be placed into.”

The officer, who was not identified, is an 18-year veteran of the department assigned to the special operations unit.

“He had just gotten off work,” Frashure told WJZ-TV. “He had his duty weapon inside of a bag and when the suspect asked for a wallet, he reached into his bag like he was getting his wallet. That’s when he shot the suspect because he was pointing a gun at him.”

The cop, who was not in uniform, fired several shots at Moreland. Police said, according to the station, that Moreland had been homeless for some time. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police determined after the shooting that Moreland’s weapon was a realistic-looking toy gun.

“It looked like a black revolver,” Frashure told WJZ. “That’s believed what the suspect pointed at the officer.”

HONESTY REPAID
Busboy who gave back
$3G receives big reward

A struggling Colorado busboy who returned $3,000 in cash that he found on the floor is getting rewarded with a big tip.

As of Monday, people impressed with Johnny Duckworth's honesty have raised more than $3,800 through gofundme.com.

He found the cash Tuesday at Randy's Southside Diner in Grand Junction, and handed it over to his boss, Randy Emmons.

The money was in an envelope behind a booth. There was also a bank ATM slip inside, and the bank was able to return the money to its owner, who gave Duckworth a $300 tip.

Emmons told KKCO-TV that Duckworth rides his bike to work, and his paycheck is garnished for medical bills.

Duckworth says he never thought of keeping the money, saying "I work for a living."
