Angels 2B Trade Options

Giavotella has a career .277 Obp

I like the kid but somebody needs to lock the liquor cabinet. Although, I've always said that anything is possible in this silly game.

Yep. The guy has had a horrible OBP in what is now no longer a small sample size of at bats in the bigs. We should be thrilled with .260/.310/.360

I'm not a big fan of ST stats ... I'm a fan of small blue collars players like Giavoltella (Eckstein) making good at the ML level.

Even though Rutledge has struggled in ST ... he's bigger, stronger, younger, more experienced at the ML level, and has a better career resume.

I'm happy either way.

The reason 2b is a hole right now is because Kendrick is gone and there is no true 4th or 5th hitter in the lineup as Sosh wants it currently constructed. If Trout and Pujols must remain at 2 and 3 respectively in the lineup, then a clean up hitter is going to be needed and 2B is an empty hole of lost expectations. Utley would make sense... 5 years ago. If someone stepped up and could hit 20 homers with 80 rbi's outside of the top 3 in the lineup, the Angels will be ok. If not, it could be a struggle to score runs for long stretches this season.

i think if he breaks out with the club for season start he will be do very well in the first month...think he knows this could be one of last times for major starting role on any club.   i like him....good energy, speed.

i am not sure that was a running gaff...i though he was trying to steal third there?   looked like it.   i like his speed batting ninth.

If Giavotella lived up to the minor league numbers and moved to leadoff, it'd make Pujols the cleanup hitter, which would be ideal. Otherwise, I think Cron's doing a lot this Spring and could be that guy, as long as you aren't expecting anything in the OBP department.

If you need OBP from a cleanup hitter then it seems like Freese and Joyce would be the candidates as they'll both probably hit 15ish HR's.

An outside the box option could be Iannetta or Aybar. Chris could DH when not catching a and he'd fit the mold pretty well, and as we saw from Aybar last year, if given the opportunity, he can drive runs in, though not via HR.

The hit the lottery option would be Hamilton returning and suddenly remembering how to hit again, though I think I've given up in that ever happening.

I like Darwin Barney but I think the Halos are going to stick with a combo of Giavotella and Featherston and see how it goes.

Rutledge may be sent to SLC or just DFA'd at this point.

Not sure where Darwin Barney winds up -- didn't realize he would be under club control for THREE YEARS -- many thought that when the Dodgers acquired Barney they did so, not so much to have him play but to keep him off the SF Giants roster when the Giants needed a 2B (they finally settled on putting Joe Paink there).

Dodgers may be like the Halos and carry one less pitcher for the first two weeks of the season and then make the tough position player decisions in mid-April.

Saw some of the negative posts (well, one) on Barney here -- not sure why that is -- I like a defensive specialist (much like John McDonald making the roster last year) on the roster because you can put that guy in to PH in a bunt situation/ PR (primarily for Freese) and then stay in to play 2B -- a guy like Gaviotella or Featherston could then spell Freese at 3B in the late innings and you have at total upgrade defensively at 3B, Aybar at SS and a guy like Barney at 2B to make that rally killing DP or to make that 8th inning base hit either an OUT or an infield hit that doesn't get to the OF to score a run........

if last year's playoffs tough MLB teams anything -- it's that speed and defense (and YES, pitching ALWAYS pitching) are the keys.........a guy like Barney at 2B would be a major upgrade on D -- and while the guy's website says Barney would hit .250 or so -- I wouldn't count on much more than .215 to .225..........

Not sure, but Kubitza's looking awfully good right now.  And in case he doesn't seem to work out the Angels have given Grant Green, Tayler Featherston, Josh Rutledge and Alex Yarbrough reps there.  If none of those work out, well then there's always Kaleb Cowart, who would actually be a very good defensive 3B.  In essence, if Kubitza doesn't work out (he will), the Angels would have a similar situation at 3B as they do at 2B right now.
