Angels Catchers

I think getting rid of Conger was pretty f*****g dumb. Also LAAMike---get your spelling right.

Given regular playing time, being a younger guy, I think Conger had the possibility of performing as well as ---if not better--- than Iannetta both offensively and defensively. Kid had his head on straight, he had some pop, he was a switch hitter! He had some things to learn but eff it give him a shot, with experience the speed and skills would come.

Our lack of quality catchers has been hurting us for a while. And IMO Iannetta is not one of the elite. A strong catcher silently, but strongly, gets it done.

I am going to miss Conger.

Let's be fair, the he only catcher outside of Iannetta to get constant AB's is Butera and he wasn't brought in for his bat, which makes Jeff Mathis blush.

Perez is a good defensive catcher and should be useful at making contact in the majors. Bandy's the one to look out for. He has Iannetta's eye and power, but us better defensively.

Iannetta and Butera will be fine this year, in the same way Napoli and Mathis were fine. And in a couple years Bandy and Perez will be fine in the same way Iannetta and Conger were fine.

So much of their value is something you just can put a number on. The way they get to know pitchers, the way the set up, communicate, understand a pitcher's needs and a hitters weaknesses. The way they encourage in the dugout, the way they can coordinate a plan of attack with the pitching coach.

Iannetta's good at all of these things. Bandy is too it's just a matter if experience. Butera should be a solid addition in the backup and defensive specialist role. You know he'll be predominantly be catching 9th innings. Someone haas to contain the run game and when he guns down the tying run at 2B you'll be glad to have him.

I hope this scenario is more frequent than him leaving runners stranded at 2nd.

Conger has been given plenty of chances to prove he can hit and has certainly given every indication that we can't. We got a decent catcher back in that trade - a downgrade but not a huge one - and someone who has the chance to be a good starting pitcher for us for a very long time. Basically, it's "pretty f*****g dumb" to think that trade was "pretty f******g dumb".
