Kansas bill allows for prosecution of teachers...

Recommended Posts

...who use materials that aren't to the liking of Kansas legislators. Just when I believed that my former home state of Oklahoma had cornered the market on ignorant meddling in education, along comes Kansas SB 56.

Kansas Senate wants to imprison teachers who assign books it dislikes

No idea how teachers are supposed to comply with this, since at least one legislator has called a book written by a Nobel Prize winner "pornography".

Sending my kid to private school is priority 1

I enjoyed my 12 years of private school.  I was taught so many things that really stuck with me.

My favorite, "God doesn't want black people to marry white people.  It's selfish.  It not fair to the children they'll have."

What I enjoyed most about this lesson was that the girl sitting next to me was the offspring of a black father and white mother.

Trinity Lutheran in Whittier.  That's where Brian and I played sports against each other in middle school.  (He went to Faith Lutheran in Whittier)

I told my parents about this recently and they were flabbergasted.  Of course, I think I told them this after they spent some time talking about how bad public schools are.

In all honesty, it's one of the things that drove me away from church when I was in my late teens and twenties.  Very sad.

Crazy.  Been going to church straight for 34 years and never heard such a thing from the pulpit.  Curious, was it one teacher or do you feel that was the thought process throughout the school?

Such a strange, unbiblical notion to present as well.

It was the principle of the school.  Who was also responsible for the 7th and 8th grade religion classes.

Never heard any of the pastors of the church say anything remotely as inflammatory.  But from a 12 and 13 year old students point of view, there was anyone in the church/school with more clout than the principle/teacher.  A 6'3" German guy who was big on corporal punishment.  So raising your hand and saying, "Ummm ... yeah.  I think you're a complete racist" was kind not really an option.

Yeah, no doubt.  That is really awful.

Really sad that this bill is something someone actually wants to put into law.

Also, private school isn't a guarantee.  Teachers don't have to have any certifications and the schools don't have to live up to any standards.  If I lived in south OC I would definitely send my kid to private school though.

in the adventist system, while we aren't required to have a state credential, we do have pretty rigorous standards for certification that we are required to meet. we also have to take continuing education classes to renew our credential. many of my colleagues have or used to have state credentials, however.

when i was growing up, the concept i heard several times about interracial marriages was always "do not be unequally yoked" which i think was more a reference to being with a non-believer more than anything else.
