ISIS delenda est

Why would Saudi Arabia try to destroy ISIS when they are helping to support them?

They would probably have a token force just to look good.

A confused mess. Saudi Arabia, a purported ally of the U.S., supporting ISIS. The whole thing over there is absurd. Nothing is what it appears to be, and what is presented as propaganda by the various countries and their media outlets is only distantly related to the truth.

It's pretty simple when you take a step back. The U.S. (along with Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey) wants Assad gone in order to run a natural gas pipeline from Qatar to Europe. Russia wants to keep Assad in power in order to protect their military base at Latakia and to also keep alive the possibility of an oil pipeline from Iran to the Mediterranean. Everything else is foreplay and window dressing.

Are you referring to the Saudi government or certain Saudi citizens? I guarantee you that the title Custodian of the Holy Mosques matters to the government and they won't support anyone who threatens that. I see their aircrews everyday and it's the only reason they fly the missions.

Maybe Saudi citizens sending money while the government looks the other way?

What about the missions in Yemen to fight the Houthis?

I was referring specifically to the missions in the north but Yemen is all about Iran. They consider them to be their greatest enemy. Want no Shia influence there because that border is unmanageable.

We're not too happy with Assads human rights record, either, though I don't know how much of that is in play right now.

Yeah, when dealing with the middle east, human rights records are something you use when you need something to add to your PR assault to get popular support. Nobody is mounting any meaningful campaign to rein that in. There are no good guys here. Only the ones you tolerate because they serve your agenda. This includes the Turks but since they're NATO members we have to have their back.

this. This is a concept thats hard flr americans and westerners in general to understand.

The enemy to "iraq", the saudis and most gulf states is iran. Iraq being majority shiite is a direct rhreat to the saudis and gulf states. We as anericans think in terms of nationalities, the middle east thinks in terms of religion and tribes.

ISIS gets support from a ton of iraqis because they see them as a buffer to the majority shiite army of the govt, and iran. This is where the saudis agree with that.

The difference being, like arch said, is the people vs the govt. Whereas the saudi citizens, mostly sunni, see the shia as the enemy and need to fight them by proxy (isis, AQ, ir whoever else), rhe saudi govt knows its a matter of time before the same groups fighting rhe shia come for the royals, and they become the next assad, qaddaffi

Most people in rhe middle east, among others, blame the britts for the problem. The britts drew up the borders decades ago, and it created all kinds of problems. Again, religion and tribe trumb nationality. Iraqis as a whole today side with iran more than their own govt. But not so much in anbar, where the power originally was.

Obama's new ISIS Czar is a terrorist sympathizer who was once fired by the president for having ties to Hamas. His family was deeply involved in anti-Israel activism. He was rehired as a senior policy adviser.

You can't make this stuff up.  Very strange world we're living in.
