California Veterinarian’s List: Steroid Reporting By The Numbers

Really interesting read.  In the case of Masochistic, it's an unfortunate positive, but it looks like Ellils was at least within the rules.  Now, if it wasn't reported, it's a whole different situation.  But at least it was reported.

It would be an interesting angle to go off a layoff, but had a roid injection.  Usually layoffs are throw out horses for me.

Did some reading up on EHV-1 (equine herpes virus)...that's some serious shit.

Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1) infection in horses can cause respiratory disease, abortion in mares, neonatal foal death and neurological disease. The neurological form of the disease is known as Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy (EHM) and may be caused by damage to blood vessels of the brain and spinal cord associated with EHV-1 infection. EHM is most often due to the neuropathogenic strain of EHV-1, but may occasionally be caused by the non-neuropathogenic strain of the virus.

Gulfstream is my least favorite "premier" race track. It is not a fair surface and the configuration pretty much eliminates outside horses in two turn races.

Draw for Pegasus is at 2pm PDT. You can pretty much toss anyone outside of the 8 hole from win contention.

Let's hope Chrome and Arrogate draw next to each other in somewhere around the middle...like 3-4.

Well....shit. Chrome is going to need to use a lot of early energy to get into position for the turn.

1. Arrogate (Mike Smith), 7-5

2. Prayer for Relief (Florent Geroux), 50-1

3. Neolithic (John Velazquez), 30-1

4. Noble Bird (Julien Leparoux), 25-1

5. War Story (Antonio Gallardo), 50-1

6. War Envoy (Luis Saez), 50-1

7. Shaman Ghost (Jose Oritz), 20-1

8. Semper Fortis (Tyler Gaffalione), 50-1

9. Keen Ice (Javier Castellano), 12-1

10. Breaking Lucky (Luis Contreras), 25-1

11. Eragon (Edgar Prado), 50-1

12. California Chrome (Victor Espinoza), 6-5

Chrome will need to use his speed for a quick break in the short dash to the first turn to avoid getting parked. Odds are stacked against horses starting from the outside in a large field.

Notably, Big Brown won the 2008 Florida Derby from the 12 post at Gulfstream, then went on to win the Kentucky Derby from the No. 20 post, only the second horse in 52 years to win it from outside the 16th starting spot.

Arrogate, who won the Eclipse Award as 2016’s outstanding 3-year-old, will have a shorter route to the turn but will have to guard against being cut off by others with early speed.

“If the horse is good enough, he’s going to perform,” Sherman said, adding about California Chrome, “He’s good enough, believe me when I tell you, he’s a once-of-a-lifetime horse. He’s the real McCoy.”

Futures.  I have an ungodly amount (for me that is, Adam can vouch, I'm cheap) on Three Rules.  But of the other horses, Klimt 22/1, Practical Joke 60-1, Made you Look 175-1 (was hoping he would go to dirt, he's looked like the horse on turf), Gormley 19-1, Practical joke again 34-1, Snydergaard 59-1, Classic Empire 8-1, Not this Time 9-1, McCracken 40-1.  I have three rules 60-1, 24-1, 40-1, and 75-1.

I'm thinking of putting more on him now that he isn't listed on the official futures bet.  In case you don't know, he's been putting up bullets after the Breeders Cup.  And by bullets, I think one of his works, he did a 5 furlong in 57 seconds at Gulfstream.  He finished 6th in the Breeders Cup Juveniles.  Here is what you may not now.  He was shipped out the week of the Breeders Cup.  He was vanned for 24 hours to Keenland.  Then flew 24 hours to Santa Anita.  And this was the week of the Breeders Cup.  The next Gulfstream points race is the Holy Bull on 2/4.  IMO, he's the perfect horse that you can still get big odds on.
