Airstrikes against Islamic State in Syria stir anger among rebels

Since the strikes began last week, opposition activists have staged protests and denounced the U.S. air assault as misguided and an attack on Islam. Critics say the bombardment should be aimed at forces loyal to the government of President Bashar Assad, not his opponents.

"The coalition is against the blessed Syrian revolution, using the excuse of Daesh," said a brigade commander with the U.S.-backed Free Syrian Army who goes by the nickname Abu Qusay. "Daesh" is the Arabic acronym for the militant group Islamic State.

"Heavily armed ISIS fighters, who acquired their weapons from the Iraqi army."

Who got their weapons from The American government.

It was foolish to pull out when removing Saddam was the undertaking of a VERY LONG expedition, if we wanted indeed to set them up for success. Even then, setting them up for success means putting another "dictator" in who will eventually become just as ruthless anyway.

There are so many problems with arming middle-easterners, the least of which is not the fact that you cannot assess the loyalties of the individuals tasked with manning the weapons. How do we know that Abdul Bin Iraqi isn't some crazy Caliphatist? Besides that, as soon as shit looks grim, what is to stop these guys from just joining the the extremist groups in the interest of self-preservation?

If I were the U.S. I would consider every one else leeches.

That would certainly be a myopic point of view.  Lets take a look at how the U.S. has handled themselves in the middle east the last few decades.  Iran, put in a puppet dictator who fleeced the country and was completely corrupt until the country couldn't stand it anymore and tossed him out, now they are a bitter enemy.  Irag, propped up Saddam because he was warring against bitter enemy Iran and let him wreak havok in his own country for decades, killing, maiming, raping and plundering until he dared cross the U.S. by trying to invade Kuwait.  Then we had to deal with him.

Afghanistan, propped up the Taliban and gave them weapons, encouraged their opiate trade as a means to keep funded while fighting the Russians.  Now we are still losing young men and women to that very group.

Yeah, those stupid leeches.
