Yeah, the trade is strange for both sides. Castro is signed through 2019, with a team option for 2020.  Weird.

They'll trade Castro to free themselves of that contract. They're gonna need as much payroll flexibility as they can get so they can overpay for high-end starters in FA/trade for htem and lock them up to extensions. They have the best farm in baseball but all of their top talent are position players

Samardzija being dealt is a lock, but Hammel is a FA after this year....so the A's will trade Hammel at the end of this month for studs
