Angels on track to make the Wild Card game -- then it's a one game playoff and anything can happen there --

 

if they win that game. a big IF, the Angels -- as presently constituted and with the line up being trotted onto the field and with the pen use as it currently is, likely won't go past the ALDS if they can even get there.

that Wild Card game is a real tough deal --- and , as designed, puts the Wild Card team (the one that emerges from the one game playoff) at an immediate disadvantage.

 

if you are the Halos -- who do you pitch for the Wild Card one game playoff -- gotta be your ace, Weaver.........

 

so you start the ALDS series - should you get there, without being able to use Weaver until game 4 possibly  game 3 on short rest.

The wild card is definite disadvantage but I can't see any other way we get into the playoffs with the bullpen we have and the continuos inability to hit with RISP. This team can be so frustrating to watch! One minute they look unbeatable, the next they crap all over the place!

Richards is our best pitcher. Considering Weaver's home/road splits Richards should start a road elimination game as of today.

Not to mention a GM who wouldn't know a good reliever if he saw one, or a pitching coach who couldn't develop a staff if he tried !!!!

Does no good with a pen full of wusses.

Because of that, this offense has to be great.

It ain't, not with loser hitters like Freese and Kendrick and still giving at bats to the washed up Ibanez. Kendrick is fast sinking towards a .700 OPS.

Oh! Yeah! I can see the Angels makes the playoff as one of the wild card team, and winning the one game playoff with 6-0 lead after 6th inning, only to have this blowpen comes in and give up 15 runs in 3 innings and loss the game 15-6.

This is where the team struggles on offense.  It should be an anomaly, but they've struggled there all season.  If not for Trout, they'd be on track for the lowest wRC+ in high leverage since the stat has been tracked.  Even with his incredible performance, they are among the lowest. 

 

It depends on your definition of what may or may not be a problem.  To me, the missed opportunities on offense have been a problem.  If the team had performed capably in high leverage at this point, they'd have scored the most runs in baseball by a lot. 

 

They lack talent in the bullpen, but not on offense.  So they need the offense to come thru in order to make up the difference. 

 

They are just a frustrating team because they have a lot of chances to win games that they don't take advantage of, and those chances seem to manifest when the game feels like it's more on the line.  Like when the pen pitches or when they miss opportunities to bring runners home with the offense. 

 

It doesn't make them bad though.  They are a good team, but they could be really good.

Many here don't seam to realize how much offense is down. Despite some struggles Howie is still a top 10 2B with his bat.

Actually, I think we're a lock to make that stupid one game wild-card playoff.

We need to run down Oakland and avoid that.

Winning the division is key to making the playoffs.

Angels are far from a lock to get a wild card spot ... there's a ton of baseball left to play.
