2014 First-Year Player Draft Thread

Can you convert me to the Gettys love? I'm not sure I get it. Admittedly, I've never seen him play, but everything I read says that he really underperformed this last year. I worry that he's all tools little performance a la Bolden/Clarke. Have you seen him play? What happened with him this year?

Yeah, I've read enough about Gettys that makes me hope the Angels stay far away.

i see terrible balance from gettys in that video. probably helps to explain his trouble with swing and miss. based off of that video i'm not a fan.

Scotty, no way the Angles should give Cowart that much time. He is clearly a bust as a positional play. He should be on the mound in a month.

@ScottyA_MWAH: Kaleb Cowart in his 2nd stint in AA has no dropped under the mendoza line on the season. Batting .198.

The Angels might have to consider drafting a 3B early in the draft.

Don't know enough to really comment on this topic. But I would just take the best projected arm on the board and stock pile pitching.

I have no opinion on who the Angels should draft. I don't attend high school games and I'm no scout.

Position shouldn't matter much, though. Shouldn't be a consideration at all in the first round.

I would be thrilled if Beede falls to us like Law's mock.

 

Don't know too much about most of the other guys this year, although I've also seen the Angels connected to Nick Burdi with that first pick, which would be pretty underwhelming on talent alone.

 

I suppose that might make some sense if they've got their eye on an overslot guy later on and they think Burdi allows them to do that.

Unless you have more than 1 first round pick, or multiple supplemental picks, there's no reason to draft underslot in the first round with the idea of drafting over slot later.

He has fast hands and a compact swing. He may not be polished with his load and balance, as an 18 year old, but the fact is he has the two most important qualities for a hitter to build off. Combine that with his hustle, speed, arm... it'd be incredibly stupid to pass on him because of a 5 minute video that shows correctable flaws. LOL

Now that I feel my love affair with Gettys has been shown pre-draft, I will say that I think we'll get a Top 10 talent at our pick because we have pretty incompetent franchises picking before us.

Mock drafts don't mean much, but almost every one I've read has the Angels drafting Beede.

Bleh, if we're gonna take a reliever at all that early(which I'm not fond of) I much rather take Burdi than Howard at least.

This is what I was talking about in terms of drafting to maximize value as a strategy. A starting pitcher is worth more long term compared to a reliever, so it doesn't make sense to draft a reliever in the 1st round under that strategy. I'd rather see us take a safe pick hitter over a reliever in the 1st round.
