We just got a dog.  The cats hate her.  She likes them.  They pretty much stay downstairs now unless one of the boys brings them up and takes them to their room.

my son is autistic, at times the cat is the only thing that an comfort him.  The only one to connect with him.  The dog can be a little overwhelming for him.

It's pretty clear that your family has in its possession a companion dog that is unfortunately stuck in a cat's body due to some kind of genetic accident. We must be sure to not allow the cat lobby to use your case as a means of advancing the cat agenda.
