Well DUH!  They definitely didn't come from the end of a rainbow.

I'm pretty sure every buried hoard of gold/jewels/coins/jewel-encrusted gold coins was stolen.

If there is any chance that the rightful owners could come back and claim your treasure, why on earth would you tell anyone?

For those who said they would have kept quiet - what would you have done with the coins? Sure, they are worth a lot, but only if you sell them.

Put the money in an overseas account.

I knew the government would try to claim it. I figured they would claim it was hidden during the years it was illegal to own gold. Government couldn't be happy just taking half. Gotta seize the whole thing.

Experts now doubting that they were stolen from the Mint.  New theory that they were stashed by the Confederates to fund a second civil war!

Read about this over the weekend.

The couple had already done all the legal legwork and research to make sure they can sell them.

These are just theories coming out.

They explicitly didn't provide the address though to the media becuase it would spawn decades of legal crap with families coming out of the woodwork discussing old property ties/lines.

 

Most likely it was a single dude from back in the day who was stashing his own savings.

And death caught up to him before he could enjoy his riches.

 

Lesson: live like a baller now. It's more fun than when you're old/dead.
