Ahmad Kadyrov was one of the leaders of the independence movement but made nice with Putin and helped Russia stabilize the territory/get rid of the ones who wouldn’t play ball.  Putin installed him as the president but he was assassinated in the early 2000’s.  His son Ramzan took over and is a hyper Putin loyalist.  Basically they’re either very loyal because Putin takes care of them or they’re crushed.

Many do. But the current Chechen leader is tight with Putin.

Kind of like current Ukraine (or Georgia, Belarus, etc). Theres a large percentage of people who view themselves as "chechen" (or Ukranian, Belarussian). And another group that considers themselves "Russian Chechens". 

Comes down to whos in charge. And currently, Chechnya has a pro Moscow govt.
