Hall of Fame Posts: 10189 | http://angels.ocregister.com/2013/01/17/tony-pena-wont-be-ready-for... Dipoto said the other Angels pitchers who are coming off surgery are all doing well, including Ryan Madson, who underwent Tommy John surgery last April. Madson threw off the mound for the first time on Monday, and he is scheduled to do so again on Friday. He’ll continue throwing twice a week until spring training begins.

Hopefully we see the version of Kevin Jepsen we got from August - Sept of last year. He was easily the best RP on the staff during that timespan. I'm thinking we may go w/ 11 pitchers to start, then bump that up to 12 and move one of the bench players to the minors when Madson is ready. starters + Frieri, Jepsen, Downs, Burnett, Williams, then slot Madson later.

Cedar Rapids (Low-A) Posts: 317 | If Madson isn't ready to go until June, it should be no big deal. T.J. seems like a 2 year recovery for most guys anyhow. Frieri has potential for a Romo type season with the experience and confidence he gained last season. I have faith in Dipoto's vision of Vargas and Blanton being solid, inning eating, replacements for Mental Case Chinstrap, and Half Season Haren. The first real AL offense this team has had since Glaus, Salmon, and GA... IS going to put up a lot of crooked number, double-digit run games, as long as bunt for a run Scioscia can adjust to it, sit his ample butt down on the bench, and stay the hell out of their way. Personally, I would like to see Williams in the pen, with Richards as 5th starter. Williams, Downs, Jepsen, Burnettt, and Frieri should be able to handle the pen workload until Madson is ready to set up at first, and then maybe share 9th inning non-closing (ahead by more than 3) duties later in the season. Of course injuries, or the questionable competence of Butcher, could blow that all to bits, but on paper, to start the season.... wow. That scenario looks pretty promising. Beane, Theo, Cashman, et al., step aside. The "Dipoto Decade" is about to devastate your shores like a Japanese tsunami. Edited to try and put this into paragraphs.... Barring injury, neither Williams or Richards should be in the rotation to start the year, with Williams most likely being the long guy in the pen and Richards staying in AAA ready to be called up when necessary.

Weaver Cj Vargas Blanton You're right....Even though I was looking at the 40 man roster, and saw his name, I was forgetting him. He could actually be the under the radar pick up of the year. I love Jerry Dipoto.

| Pen and rotation still question marks at this point. This team needs a healthy and productive Madson. Sean Burnett alone isn't gonna change much. At this point, it would be surprising if Madson doesn't start the season on the DL. Edited by bloodbrother 2013-02-12 8:24 AM | |||

MAdson is going to get an MRI on his elbow today. Yippee Alden Gonzalez @Alden_Gonzalez Madson will have an MRI later today to make sure elbow isn't anything more than general soreness. If clean, he'll be cleared to throw again.
