While I was in the Navy I worked and deployed with a few men who were gay. It was fairly common knowledge and nobody really cared, despite constant sharing of tight quarters including berthing and shower spaces.

I appreciate your honesty, Torii, but you need to grow up. It's only difficult if you make it difficult.

I've lost so much respect for Torii in the last 6 months.

Ruined some of his legacy as an Angel, for me.

Im not homophobic at all, and am against any kind of stereotyping. But if hunter really is religious (per the article), I dont support the views but I understan his take on it. Most guys I know who are christians have the same take.

Again, Im not supporting his views, just pointing out that its pretty common among religious people.

By the way Torii, considering you've played 16 years in the big leagues, in addition to 4 years in the minors before that, and high school ball before that, there is a pretty decent chance you have had a gay teammate.

And if one of your new Tigers' teammates is gay? Oh boy.

I don't see a problem. Don't ask don't tell is a wonderful policy that worked. It was the way we lived for our entire history up until the age of liberalism. It should be emulated everywhere.

Is it really that bad to say you would be uncomfortable changing and showering around a gay man? Alternatively, does a woman not have a right to feel uncomfortable being naked in front of a man?

I know Torii cited religious reasons, honestly or not (I don't buy it, he is just trying to justify his feelings in a way society may partially accept), but no one is calling out gay players. No one is threatening them in any way. Tolerance is about dealing with the things you do not like in a professional, mature, adult manner - it is not about reprogramming peoples brains to feel differently. Somewhere along the way we have been taught that feeling a certain way about some issues is just as wrong as acting out on it. That is bullshit.

My dad has a saying he cribbed from the book "Illusions" by Richard Bach - "argue for your limitations, and sure enough they're yours." I find that profound and it certainly applies in this case. Torii says it would be difficult, so indeed it would be for him. He's arguing for his limitations.

This is exactly correct, about hiding his logical statement with religious idiocy. This is why kids will always call each other a 'fag' and we'll always talk about politicians taking it up the ass. If you're trying to be hetero, sodomy is failure.

These reactions are hilarious. Torii is entitled to his beliefs. Doesn't change my opinion of him as a person one bit because I know he doesn't intend to offend anyone. Gays may be offended by it, but that's their problem. Torii is just citing his beliefs when asked a question on the subject by a reporter.

Oh, and as far as the beard and seashell comments go I am 99% sure that's old testament law that hasn't applied to anyone in a couple thousand years. Helps to know the Bible a bit before making dumb statements like that.

Kevin Baxter of the Los Angeles Times has written an insightful piece on the life of the gay athlete in professional sports. As part of his reporting, Baxter sought out comments from a number of straight athletes on the subject, and here's how he summarized his conversation with veteran Tigers outfielder Torii Hunter:

Like in the New England Patriots' locker room. Earlier this season linebacker Brandon Spikes sent out a tweet claiming to be homophobic "just like I'm arachnophobic. I have nothing against homosexuals or spiders but I'd still scream if I found one in my bathtub."

Spikes later said he was joking. But former Angels outfielder Torii Hunter, among baseball's most thoughtful and intelligent players, isn't kidding when he says an "out" teammate could divide a team.

"For me, as a Christian … I will be uncomfortable because in all my teachings and all my learning, biblically, it's not right," he says. "It will be difficult and uncomfortable."

Hunter is of course entitled to his personal beliefs (although one wonders whether he is similarly affronted by, say, shellfish and neatly maintained beards, which are also forbidden by the holiness code of Leviticus), and when he talks about potential problems within the clubhouse, he may well be correct.

On the other hand, if straight ballplayers allow themselves to be sundered by the mere presence of an openly gay teammate, then that says more about their shortcomings than it does about the audacity of the gay teammate to, you know, be himself.

  SPIN

Much ado about nothing.

I love when people declare that people are allowed to have their own opinions. They usually say it as an explanation as to why someone shouldn't have an opinion.

Torii said something. Some people don't like it. Torii gets his opinion. So do they. I don't see the issue. If you don't like people not liking what Torii says perhaps you should tell Torii to shut his mouth.
