Uehara isn't a free agent unless the Rangers released him or non tendered him Koji Uehara chose to enter free agency rather than complete his contract with the Texas Rangers. A clause in his contract allowed him to test free agency. Although Uehara saw limited playing time with the Rangers, 37 innings in 2012, he had 46 strikeouts. Uehara ended the season with an ERA of 1.75. Uehara has entered free agency seeking a larger contract. Likely, Uehara can demand more than the Rangers want to pay, and the team will have to let him go.

Hall of Fame Posts: 5456 Location: Las Vegas, NV | To answer your question, I don't see us being big players in the free agent market again, after all the money that was spent last year. Zack Greinke is a possibility, but other than that, probably minor free agent signings and perhaps a trade or two. A deal involving big names on our end would be surprising. The bullpen basically cost us the division a year ago. We led the AL in blown saves for the second consecutive year, and that doesn't even count the leads blown in non-save situations, of which there were many. It is a major area of concern. With Greinke a free agent, Haren non-tendered and Santana traded, the starting rotation needs attention. I hope that the FO has a plan beyond Greinke in case he signs elsewhere. Third base is a hole as well, and if anyone would take Vernon Wells, that would be a bonus. We are probably set at DH, catcher, every infield position except 3B and in the outfield. I am concerned about replacing Torii Hunter's production and influence in the clubhouse. The former will be easier than the latter. Edited by Vegas Halo Fan 2012-12-02 6:13 PM

MY guess is we'll get Greinke unless the Dodgers bid the price up into the stratosphere. I don't see the Nationals, the Rangers, or the Angels bidding anywhere close to 7/$160 (ie CC Sabathia territory) as has been speculated by some. If we don't get Greinke, we'll likely go after a solid second tier starter (eg Anibal Sanches) and a couple guys rebounding from injury (eg McCarthy, Haren). I also expect a few more not-so-spectacular trades (like the recent Walden trade) for some minor league pitching depth.

Hall of Fame Posts: 9232 | The Rays are close to signing James Loney. I wonder if they'll give him a chance to be their full time 1B. Rays Close To Signing James Loney By Zach Links [December 2 at 11:50pm CST] The Rays appear close to signing free agent first baseman James Loney, according to Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports (via Twitter). It would be a one-year deal for Loney, according to Jim Bowden of ESPN.com (via Twitter). Loney came to the Red Sox as a part of August's blockbuster trade with the Dodgers. On the year, 28-year-old hit .249/.293/.336 with six homers in 465 plate appearances for the two clubs. Boston was said to be considering a return for Loney but the odds were pegged at 50-50 in late October. Read more at http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/#qAe0cjaUHTXSerKh.99

Hall of Fame Posts: 9232 | Rays Discussing Espinosa, Morse With Nationals By Steve Adams [December 3 at 12:44am CST] The Rays are nearing a one-year deal with James Loney, but the teams are also discussing the possiblity of a trade involving some of Tampa Bay's starting pitching for Danny Espinosa and Michael Morse, according to Jim Bowden of ESPN and MLB Network Radio (Twitter link). Morse would represent a major offensive upgrade from Carlos Pena at first base, or he could slot into left field with Desmond Jennings taking over B.J. Upton's old position of center field. Espinosa could help the Rays at either middle infield position, where they've had a bit of a carousel in recent years. Both Jeremy Hellickson and James Shields have been mentioned frequently as potential trade chips for Rays GM Andrew Friedman. It's also been reported that David Price could be had for the right offer, though the asking price (no pun intended) there would undoubtedly be sky-high. The Nationals have some infield flexibility given the presence of Steve Lombardozzi, and they could handle the loss of Morse's bat if general manager Mike Rizzo is able secure a new contract with Adam LaRoche.
