@JonHeymanCBS: Ryan Madson is close to a deal with the LA #angels. he is likely to be their closer.

@JonHeymanCBS: Madson deal with #angels will be for 1 year. it will likely allow them to use ernesto frieri as set-up man.

Nice. I like it, assuming the money isn't ridiculous. $7-8MM would be about the max I would expect, although it could also be heavily incentive laden.

I think it's a step in the right direction and I love the one year deal

But I'm of the opinion that you still need 1-2 more bullpen guys

I'm also a bit hesitant to immediately slot the guy in as our closer, given that he's coming off a major injury.

No doubt he will need to prove himself, but Frieri is far more valuable in the 8th than 9th I think. You could also bring in Frieri in the 7th to get one out. This will also allow MS to use Downs more properly vs lefties at any point in the 6th, 7th or 8th.

The most interesting part of this potential signing is the fact that we have signed a deal with a Boras client again.

If everyone here is so hopeful that the deal is in the 6-9 Mill range, and if that is likely, then can someone please explain to me Madson's logic in declining his $11 million option? What, so he can be promised a closer's role? Makes no sense unless he's going to be paid $10mill +

If the article on TradeRumors is accurate, he declined an 11 million option for a 2.5 buyout....why would he do that if he were getting only 4-6? The article could be wrong, I could certainly see the Reds declining the option...

He got 2.5 mil as a buy out. Perhaps he thought the market would be higher. Maybe he just wanted to come to socal. At 9 mil (with the buyout) he would still be making more money than his option.

He was unlikely to close in Cincinatti as they were looking to lock up Broxton for the closers role, at probably a cheaper price.

Madson has known all along that his payday would not be this season. He declined the option because the opportunity for a big pay day in 2014 won't happen if he is a set up guy in 2013. However, if he finishes this season with 35+ saves with a terrific ERA/WHIP then he should be more in line for a bigger pay day as a closer the following season.

Madson is only a 1 year deal. If Fuji is indeed offered 3 or 4 years, I don't see him being too upset at being a 7th inning guy for one year. Then closing in 2014.

This would also allow Jepsen and Walden to be guys that can be used in place of the big 3 in case the bullpen is needed too many days in a row.

Agree. With the way our bullpen has failed, it could use a couple of arms.

Besides, improving the bullpen may help improve the starting pitching. Who wants to pitch for a team with a bullpen that can't lock down your wins?

I wouldn't trade a bullpen arm just because we added one or two. Make Jepsen and Walden fight for the final bullpen spot in ST with the "loser" in AAA ready to come up when someone goes down. I believe they both have options left yes?

And as good as Jepsen was post-2012 ASB, we all remember him doing the same thing in 2009 and then tanking.
Until Jepsen duplicates a solid season, he is a question mark.

Fair point....and Walden's value isn't sky high either, because of his inconsistency....on the other hand, if you can get another piece to the puzzle in a trade, I wouldn't rule out including him in a trade...

This is why torii hunter was not re signed, well at least 1 reason. I'm sure this is a strategic signing because madson is a viable 1 year investment with not a ton of risk if it doesnt work out. Plus, it still leaves room to sign another reliever (fujikawa, adams, burnett, etc.) along with madson for roughly the price of torii, at least for the next couple of years. As long as we get another good arm in the pen, I'm glad we passed on torii.

Alden Gonzalez@Alden_Gonzalez

Madson 1-year deal, per industry source, is expected to be formalized today upon passing of physical. Indeed, it's low-base, high-incentive.

Alden Gonzalez@Alden_Gonzalez

Madson is said to be progressing well in his rehab, too, throwing off flat ground from 120 feet. #Angels

For a one year deal. Even if it's for $10 million, I wouldn't mind. It's a risk reward situation, but it's limiting the risk to one year. If there are also club options with minimal buyouts involved, I wouldn't even mind that.

Do you think starters care more about winning in general or their own wins or both? All would suggest that a quality closer would make it easier for Dipoto to sign a quality starter.
