| Random quote: "When I was a small boy growing up in Kansas, a friend of mine and I went fishing, and as we sat there in the warmth of a summer afternoon on a riverbank, we talked about what we wanted to do when we grew up. I told him that I wanted to be a real major-league baseball player, a genuine professional like Honus Wagner. My friend said that he'd like to be President of the United States. Neither of us got our wish." Dwight Eisenhower - (Added by: RunPettisRun) |

| On the heels of Mike Trout becoming the second Angel to win the AL Rookie of the Year, I am wondering who will be the best young player next year for the Angels. Not necessarily a rookie, either. Most of us knew Trout would be up last season at some point, but no one thought the guy would be up and dominate like he did. I expected him to get a late season call up, July or August, particularly because they had a good center fielder already, in Peter Bourjos, and two veteran ones in Hunter and Wells. Plus Trumbo, Abreu, Morales, etc…I didn't see him getting full time AB's. I'm glad I was wrong. In 2011, I don't think many saw the Angels having Mark Trumbo, Jordan Walden, or Peter Bourjos as three of the best players on their team that year. All three played major parts in the Angels season. In 2010, I guess the best young player was really non-existent. The team didn't really have a young breakout guy, nor did they have any young guy ready for the show. In 2009, the two young players that come to mind first are Erick Aybar and Kendrys Morales. Both had been around for a few seasons, but they really stepped forward in 2009. Nick Adenhart would have been the breakout pitcher that season had it not been for his untimely passing. In 2008, the best young performance came from the pitching side in Ervin Santana and Joe Saunders. I don't think people thought they would be as good as they were that year. In 2007, Casey Kotchman hit 37 doubles and Kendrick stepped forward. In 2006, then 25 year old Macier Izturis had his best year as an Angel, and Jered Weaver pitched exceptionally well in his first big league season. In 2005, Chone Figgins probably had his breakout season after being pretty good in parts of 03 and 04. Anyway… Most years it seems to me like there was always someone who they didn't really count on, or maybe they did, without a major track record of success, who really takes a step forward. Who will it be in 2013? My bet is on Kole Calhoun and/or Hank Conger. I hope they do well and push their way into semi-regular roles. We'll see! | |||

All-Star Posts: 1875 Location: California | It'll be Garrett Richards, who will establish himself as a legit back of the rotation option. Also, Andrew Romine will put together a decent year. Finally, I think Daniel Tillman and R.J. Alvarez will arrive late in the season and provide something new for the bullpen.

San Bernadino 66'ers Posts: 459 | Since I've started watching baseball I've always been an Angel fan, and I've always wished we could have just 1 kid that comes up and tears the league apart. Someone I could watch come up and show the league how to play the game from day 1. Pujols, Cabrera, Longoria, guys like that. Mike Trout is better than all of them. Next years break out player? Why not Nick Maronde. Edited by laagamer 2012-11-12 10:31 PM

All-Star Posts: 1875 Location: California | I feel confident that Calrissian will be the next great African American player. He flies, just the way Bourjos and Trout do, but he seems to have a millennial falcon type of power and it wouldn't be too far of a stretch to say he has a "laser" for an arm. All in all, a great all around player, and according to one scout who wished to be known only as Leah, he's quite the scoundrel, which means he exudes confidence and is a competitor. A great prospect, a lot of upside, his future lies somewhere in the clouds. Cloud city if you will.

All-Star Posts: 1695 Location: Tuscon | YouthofToday - 2012-11-12 10:03 PM Bourjos I saw an interesting comment on another board claiming that: Trumbo (LF) / Trout (CF) / Bourjos (RF) would be better than Trout (LF) /Bourjos (CF) /Trumbo (RF). The idea is Trout would be seriously underutilized in left, Bourjos has a strong throwing arm suitable for RF, and that the weakest OF (Trumbo) should be in left. Especially given the comments that Trout has openly said he's disappointed about starting LF it seemed like an interesting thought. Edited by AZMike 2012-11-13 1:31 AM

Hall of Fame Posts: 10887 Location: Perth, Western Australia | AZMike - 2012-11-13 4:30 PM Bourjos is a better outfielder than Trout, so he should play the most challenging position. Changing that just because Trout might get a little bit upset (seriously, boo effing hoo...but I highly doubt he would) is kinda dumb.YouthofToday - 2012-11-12 10:03 PM Bourjos I saw an interesting comment on another board claiming that: Trumbo (LF) / Trout (CF) / Bourjos (RF) would be better than Trout (LF) /Bourjos (CF) /Trumbo (RF). Hall of Fame Posts: 7388 Location: Limbo | I think three players will have a significant impact: Richards, Maronde, and Calhoun. Richards, if healthy, will start 28+ games and produce a league average or better ERA - I think he's going to step it up this year. Maronde won't get much playing time until the second half, but I think he'll be a strong contributor at some point. I can't shake the feeling that Kole Calhoun has a career ahead of him and will get his chance this year - maybe 300 PA of .800 OPS production. Dark horse candidates are Conger and Jimenez.

| Richards is definitely in the best position to have an impact. Maronde too can easily secure playing time. Yet, offensively it still comes down to the young guys every one knows about: Trumbo, Bourjos and the ones that have a shot at breaking in: Calhoun, Conger, Jimenez, Romine, | |||
