If I'm wrong you all can ridicule me, but I just got a great tip.

Haren for Marmol is the main deal.

If it's true, I don't really get the point of that deal, since Marmol is sort of like a less effective, more expensive version of Frieri, who they already have.

Maybe there is some money changing hands that makes me have a change of heart here, but I don't get not wanting to pick up Haren's option....and then trading him for a guy like Carlos Marmol who is being paid 10 million dollars.

Stupid move if this is the case. Increase payroll for a crappy middle reliever and now we have 1 good starting pitcher on our team.

Hmm. Haren will make $15.5MM, Marmol $9.8MM. It saves the $5.7MM but Marmol had a 7.3 bb/9ip ratio last year. I'm not sure that really helps bullpen stability unless Dipoto thinks Butcher can work wonders, which he hasn't been able to do with other pitchers.

Maybe there is more to it. Wells and Soriano?

Maybe there is some money changing hands that makes me have a change of heart here, but I don't get not wanting to pick up Haren's option....and then trading for and paying a mediocre reliever 10 million this year instead, because 10 million dollars is way too much for a guy like Carlos Marmol.

Yeah, the $ aspect of it is confusing to me, too. You owe Haren at least $3.5MM for the buyout, so that's a sunk cost. So you then trade him and the net $12MM on his contract for a dude who'll make $9.8MM next year? So you're effectively paying $13.3MM for Marmol instead of $15.5MM for Haren. Hmmm...

Not how it works. Obviously the details aren't out yet, but the Angels had to have exercised the Haren option at $15.5 and swapped him straight up for Marmol, so theoretically they are paying only Marmol's 9.8m.

Even if the Cubs are paying all of Haren's 15.5 million option, I don't like this.

Haren at 15.5 is a better value than Marmol at 9.8 million.

There better be something else where we don't know about.....

Haren for Marmol, straight up, is really questionable. Considering Haren has a buyout the opportunity cost is less than $15.5 million

So we are basically taking a 1year, $6.3 million flyer on Marmol after subtracting Haren's buyout.

I like the idea of Haren at $12.5 better (buyout is a sunk cost).

So if the Angels were going to decline the option regardless and be forced to pay the $3.5 million buyout. I guess Dipoto figured that spending an additional $6 million on Marmol would be better than $6 million on a FA reliever. I guess...

Haren reportedly going to Chicago for Marmol
by Alden Gonzalez

The Angels have reportedly traded starting pitcher Dan Haren to the Cubs in exchange for reliever Carlos Marmol. Marmol told a media outlet in the Dominican Republic, and CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman confirmed that Haren is indeed going to Chicago.
