Ryan Doumit reportedly is mulling multiple offers. I'd be surprised if the Angels aren't one of them.

Isn't he just horrendous behind the plate? Like so bad he makes Napoli look like Bench?

Yeah but what if scioscia thinks he's the 2nd greatest squatter after Mathis ? ;)

Yep, don't think MS will like this, if they did make a offer.

One of the teams is a NL team.

I'd be surprised if the other team is the Angels.

Yes.

Not sure Doumit is a great fit for the Angels because of that.

He throws out the same amount of runners as Mathis does. Defense is below average, but I'll take the guy who hits .100 points better.

Hold on...are people seriously saying they don't think an .830 OPS catcher is a good fit?

I feel like a spring with Sosh would do Doumit wonders.

Doumit 90/Conger 70 is a combo I want to see.

lol.

Wait...are you serious? The only "wonders" Scioscia would have on Doumit would be to reduce his batting average.

My comment about not being a good fit had more to do with Scioscia's overemphasis on catcher defense.

I would be okay with Doumit personally.

Scioscia knows how to prepare a catcher defensively.

Wow, it would be incredibly bizarre if we signed Doumit after trading "part-time" last January -- especially if Doumit requires a similar salary (albeit it guaranteed in this case).

They do, but it doesn't matter who's pitching when he only had ONE passed ball all season. That is really, really good.

He finally doesn't have someone riding him every game about the little things.

It's probably easier to just list the available catchers that we wouldn't take over Mathis.

I'll start:

J.R. Towles(and he's not really worse, just equally terrible)

....I'm out.

Drew Butera.

That's only based on 376 AB's for Butera. He still has a good chance of being better than Mathis.

He's a defensive downgrade from Mathis, but the fact that he can actually hit the baseball and does so with power, makes him a MUCH better baseball player than Mathis.

Hold on...are people seriously saying they don't think an .830 OPS catcher is a good fit?

My comment about not being a good fit had more to do with Scioscia's overemphasis on catcher defense.

I would be okay with Doumit personally.

There's no such thing as "overemphasis on catcher defense". Defense from a catcher is the most important position on a baseball field, outside of pitcher - regardless of what traditional or "money-ball" stats might say. Having a catcher that knows how to call good pitches and actually takes the time to research opposing batters saves countless runs over the season. Having a catcher with a good arm is a tremendous boost to the defense, not only because the catcher can throw out opposing base runners, but also because the threat of base stealing is diminished. When runners aren't going to steal or are worried about a throw to first base from the catcher after a pitch, base runners have to take a shorter lead. On a first to third play or first to home play, a shorter leadoff can make the difference between a run or an out. I read all of these anti-Mathis posts and I completely agree that he's a terrible offensively, but if the Angels management truly believes he is a boost defensively, then I am not opposed to bringing him back and platooning him with Conger, providing Conger can play adequate defense for 80 or so games. I know that I am probably going to get tarred and feathered for that comment, but I truly believe that good defense out of a catcher can completely change the make up of a team. Look at the Cardinals. The most important Cardinal over the past decade is obviously Albert Pujols, but Yadier Molina is a very, very close second. Pujols might leave VIA free agency for more money, but the Cardinals would NEVER let Yadi walk. And, I'm not comparing Mathis to Yadi there - so don't even think that. All I'm saying is that if Mathis is the best defensive catcher available, then he needs to be brought back.

And let it begin.

Ya, I'm going to have to disagree completely that you can't overemphasis catcher defense.

You can't give 1360 major league plate appearances over 7 seasons to a guy with a career .557 OPS unless he's the greatest defensive catcher to ever strap on the catcher's gear.

Mathis isn't even close to that level of defense. I'm not convinced that Mathis is even an average defensive catcher.

And yes, Yadier Molina is a very good catcher. He's the best defensive catcher in the game right now and he's a decent hitter(who just had a really good year). That combination of defense and offense is going to make him very desirable if he ever hits the FA market.

Most of the doormats here don't know about catching. They're also probably under age or they wouldn't be here on a saturday night.

That "insult" might work better if you weren't here on a Saturday night too.
