I just saw his ML debut vs Milwaukee. He came in to pitch the 8th with the Reds ahead 8-3. Lucroy was the 1st batter he faced. After getting ahead of him 0-2 on a 98 mph FB and a 86 mph cutter he throws him a 103 mph FB which Lucroy fouls off. Then he throws him an 87 mph slider that NO MAN ALIVE OR DEAD could have hit. That ball, I swear, must have dropped 3 feet. It was unreal! He got the next batter (Counsell) to ground out weakly to the SS throwing 2 FBs at 100 and 103. The final batter he faced (PH Gomez) also grounded out weakly to 2B on 2 FB pitches (101 and 99) and he has a 1-2-3 inning without even blinking an eye. He threw 8 pitches...7 were strikes. Wow! This guy is something else!

Season Ticket Holders Unite!

I've been looking for a partner to split season tickets. While doing research I ran across a website called splitseasontickets.com. They have partnered with the Mariners and Giants and offer some pretty cool services. I contacted them yesterday about approaching the Angels. They are in the process of working out something for the 2011 season, but are asking SSH to send an email to your account rep to boost interest. If any of you out there have a minute would you check out their site. Also check out the links to the mariners and giants.

Do you think this would be a good deal for SSH and non-SSH?

FYI, I'm looking for a business or family to share a 1/4 share of my club MVP seats. If you know anyone I'm offering a $100 referral fee (they have to buy in) :)

Thanks!

http://seattle.mariners.mlb.com/sea/ticketing/splitseasontickets.jsp

http://giants.splitseasontickets.com/sstickets-web/home/matcherStart.do

http://public.splitseasontickets.com/

Why Angels are losing, bad baseball juju

Random comments from Salt Lake

Good morning all. A couple of observations after watching the Bees play the past several weeks.
Mark Trumbo - Everyone knows he is a big, strong kid that can hit the ball out of sight. Last night he hit one of the longest homeruns I've ever seen. He has Major League bat speed, but he also has a long swing that MLB pitchers are going to be able to exploit. For those that are ready to pencil him in the lineup as an outfielder next year, forget it. He cannot cover the ground to play LF or RF at Angels Stadium and he still does not get a good break on balls hit his way. He is improving, but after a few games in the OF in Anaheim fans would be longing for Juan Rivera's glove. For me, his highest value to the Angels would be what they would receive in a trade for him.
Hank Conger - He is MLB ready right now. His defense is average but improving. He has a strong arm his footwork is much better than it was in April. He has a very nice swing from the left side. Even though he isn't as good hitting RH, he more than holds his own against AAA pitching. I'm not sure the Angels would turn over the catching duties to two young, inexperienced players, but I would be okay with a Wilson-Conger platoon in 2011.
Chris Pettit - Remember him? His season ended in April and with the emergence of Bourjos he has been forgotten. He is 26 or 27 and is no longer a high ceiling prospect, but I watched him play here in 2009 and his .321/.383/.482 were legit numbers. Not sure how his recovery from shoulder surgery is coming along and I'm saying he will be ready to step into the Angels OF in 2011, but if he recovers he is someone that could contribute in 2011.

...pretty much slammed the door shut on the Dodgers' playoff hopes today. They're now 7.5 games back of the Phils for the wild card.

He would look really good in our rotation, especially during late season crunch time. He'll be 34 when he's a free agent again after 2011, unless the Phillies extend him. Career K/BB ratio of 3.58 and .638 winning pct.

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/recap?gid=300901119

Oswalt is a combined 56-20 in August and September during his career. The three-time All-Star is 4-1 with a 1.90 ERA in seven starts since the Phillies acquired him in a trade with Houston on July 29—including a 2-0 win over Los Angeles in which he pitched seven innings in his second start with Philadelphia.

Los Angeles Angels Post Game Rants and Raves (9-1-2010)

Los Angeles Angels Post Game Rants and Raves (9-1-2010)
By Jeff Flinn - AngelsWin.com Contributor
Raves:
Trevor Bell continues to pitch at least into the 6th inning (failing to do so just once in his past 5 starts), and does it without walking any batters.
The bullpen, for a change, was lights out (3 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, ZERO walks, 6 Ks). Jordan Walden looks like the real deal. Jepsen needs to pitch like he did last night more often. Rodney looked like a closer.
Matsui gets the big hit, a 2-run homer.
Willits doubling to lead off the game, and then scoring, was huge. He still can't steal bases like he used to, but he is getting on base at a decent rate in 2010 (.348 OBP).
Callaspo hits his 2nd homerun as an Angel to add insurance late in the game. Slowly but surely his XBH skills are returning.
The Halos scored 4 runs despite only having 5 hits, and finally beat 2009 nemesis Jason Vargas.
Rants:
Two more errors for the defense.
Rivera is now 0 for his past 19. As each day goes by, that's more and more of his $5 million salary in 2011 that the Halos will have to pay after hopefully trading him away in the off-season. That rumor of Rivera being a 2nd half player is just THAT. He had ONE good 2nd half in 2006, and that's it. Even with his 24-62 stretch that started just before the ASB, his post-ASB OPS is still a measly .669.
Hunter strikes out 3 times, and now is RBI-less since August 6.
Wood has a TON of work to do in the Arizona fall league.

What have we got to lose?

And for those who won't read the article, he's pitching in relief now, so he'd be a bullpen candidate.

How do we know that 2011 won't be like 2010?

I understand that a lot of things have gone wrong this season with all the injuries. But, I'm not really seeing how 2011 will be any different as far as this team not making the playoffs. The only real strength the team has is starting pitching. A starting staff of Weaver, Haren, Santana, Pinero, and Kazmir ranks, at the minimum, top 5 in all of baseball. The starters will keep the team in many games and will go deep. They will have to as this team has a terrible bullpen that was made worse with the trading away of Fuentes. Say what you want about him not being an intimidating closer, but he got the job done. And, if he's still on the team, Angels would have used Rodney in the 8th instead of Jepsen. I'm not saying that's any better, but that's my point.

And don't get me started with this offense. Right now, we got a bunch of slap-hitters with mediocre batting averages. We got veterans who have declining skill sets and making the kind of mental mistakes that only rookies make. We got a manager who insist on playing a chump-hitting catcher. You can say that the team's offense will improve with a healthy Morales. But, are their any guarantees that he'll be healthy at the start of the 2011 season? Juan had a similar injury and was out for 12 months and look how good he's doing now. I mean, I have to look really hard in order to find something positive about this offense - Bourjos is picking it up, Matsui's contract will likely not be picked up. Really, other than signing some solid FA position players (which isn't likely given the team payroll situation), the only thing that we Angel fans are banking on is that the current players will play better. That's it. Do I personally think they'll player? I do, but that's because they've played so horribly. There's really only one way to go.

As painful as it is to watch this team lose night after night, I'm excited about watching the youngins develop. I am excited about the changes the team will make. As much as I want the team to win now and in 2011, I feel realistically that they will not contend until 2012. But, I will always cheer them on to win every single night.
